Point and click adventure THE DRIFTER gets a release date and new demo

You won’t have to wait that long to unravel the mystery in this stylish very Australian game.

May 30, 2025 12:00 AM

A couple of Aussie battlers in a rundown railway cart in gorgeous pixel art. It’s a striking scene. That’s THE DRIFTER a point and click adventure game that I’ve had my eye on for a while.

One of the coolest things is how veteran Melbourne devs Powerhoof have worked out perfectly how to translate the pointing and the clicking to each of the directional sticks of the controller. Move with the left stick, and aim with the right and you’ll be presented with a contextual wheel. Ithe plays like a dream on the Steam Deck.

The voice acting is really surprising; even though it’s the year of our Lord 2025, it’s still rare to hear Australian voices in video games. There’s something reassuring in being accompanied through the game by these unmistakably, gravelly Australian voices.

There is some definite weirdness going on in this game and I can’t wait to dig in further.

There’s a free demo as part of Steam Next Fest and it’s out right now. The game itself will be released on the 17th July which is really soon.

You can check out an interview I did with Dave Lloyd of Powerhoof at PAX Australia in 2023 below, and keep an eye out on Lightmap our interview podcast to learn more.
